Biodiversity

A field is usually only home to a single plant species, such as wheat. By contrast, areas on which herds of suckler cows graze play host to many different, naturally occurring grasses and herbs. Plant diversity is also increased as a result of the land being used in different ways. Flowers that bloom in different colours flourish in meadows that are deliberately mown at a later time. Such land also serves as a habitat and source of nourishment for insects.

Creating habitats

Herds of suckler cows spend the spring, summer and autumn in pastures. Their cow pats are a valuable habitat for numerous beetles and insect species. These, in turn, serve as a food source for many other animals, especially birds, and ensure the soil remains vital and fertile.
